Believe it or not, cows actually have four stomachs whereas we only have one! This is because it is difficult to digest grass and cows need the extra stomachs to help break down the grass fibres.
Does a cow produce milk for Pura all year round?
Cows usually have their calves (babies) only once a year. For about two months of the year cows feed their milk to their calves, once the calves start eating grass the cow starts giving its milk to Pura.
How old is a cow when it starts producing milk for Pura?
A cow has grown up (matured) at about 2 years of age and it is around this time that they start producing milk for Pura.
How much water must a cow drink to make 1 litre of milk?
Cows must get thirsty! For every 1 litre of milk they produce for Pura, they need to consume 2 litres of water.

How many times is a cow milked per day?
Farmers work hard looking after their cows and farm. Cows are usually milked twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening before the cows go to bed.
How much milk does a cow produce per day?
Different types of cows produce different amounts of milk. Young cows and old cows also produce different amounts of milk. On average, a cow can produce between 16-20 Litres of milk a day.

The amount of fat in cows milk can vary slightly. Milk that comes from cows has 4% fat on average.

Milk tankers are large containers that fit on the back of a truck. Tankers can come in various shapes and sizes, the tankers used to transport the milk to the Pura factory can hold up to 20,000 litres of milk!
What is a milk tank made of that holds the Pura milk?
The milk tanks are made of stainless steel. It's strong, easy to clean and a perfect material to help keep milk cold as it's transported to the Pura factory.
What temperature is milk transported?
Tankers that are used to transport milk from the farm to the Pura factory keep the milk cold, to ensure it arrives at the Pura factory as fresh as possible. The best temperature to refrigerate milk is 4 degrees Celsius.
How many tanks are there on one truck?
Trucks that take milk to the Pura factory are powerful machines with big engines, which means they can tow between 1 to 2 milk tanks.

Why does Pura test the milk?
It is very important that we test the milk when it arrives at Pura. By conducting tests we can determine if the milk meets our high standards of quality. Milk that fails these tests is rejected.
How old is milk when it reaches Pura?
In order to keep Pura milk fresh it is very important that Pura receives milk from the farm as quickly as possible. Milk that is delivered from the farm to Pura must be less than 24hours old.
How cold is milk when it arrives at Pura?
As the milk tanker truck is refrigerated, milk when it arrives at Pura is 4 degrees Celsius.
What colour is milk when it arrives at Pura?
Milk that arrives at Pura is white in colour. You can buy different coloured milk that is flavoured. For example, strawberry flavoured milk is usually pink.

What is pasteurisation?
Pasteurisation is the process of heating the milk to 72 degrees Celsius for more than 15 seconds. The benefits of pasteurisation was discovered by Frenchman Louis Pasteur in the 1860's.
Why pasteurise milk?
Pasteurisation kills harmful bacteria and bacteria that can make milk "go off" so, when refrigerated, the milk can stay fresh to the 'Best Before' date on the bottle or carton.
What is homogenisation?
Homogenisation is the process of breaking large cream droplets up into smaller ones under very high pressure. It gives the milk an even, creamy texture without a cream layer on top. No chemicals are used. Homogenisation was invented by Frenchman Auguste Gaulin in 1899.
Why homogenise milk?
Milk is homogenised so it has a smooth, creamy taste and consistent texture. By breaking large cream droplets up into smaller ones, they rise to the surface of the milk much more slowly. Milk that hasn't been homogenised often has a layer of cream on top.

The best temperature to store Pura milk in order to help keep it fresh is 4 degrees Celsius. Trucks that deliver Pura milk to milk bars, deli's and supermarkets are refrigerated in order to keep Pura milk fresh.
Why does Pura store milk cold?
Pura stores milk cold to keep it as fresh tasting as possible. If Pura milk is stored cold, refrigerated at 4 degrees Celsius or cooler it will keep fresh, for a minimum, up to the best before date code on the pack.
How fast can Pura fill milk in to bottles?
Pura can make many bottles of milk in one day. On average Pura makes between 90-180 bottles of Pura milk per minute.
How fast can Pura milk fill milk into cartons?
The machines that pack Pura milk into cartons operate at a very high speed. On average Pura makes between 200-230 cartons of Pura milk per minute.

How many 2 Litre bottles fit in a Pura milk crate?
Pura milk crates can fit 9, 2L milk bottles. By placing Pura milk bottles into crates it makes it much easier to deliver Pura milk into milk bars, deli's and supermarkets.
How many 1 Litre cartons fit in a Pura milk crate?
Pura milk crates can fit approximately 16, 1L milk cartons. Like Pura 2L bottles, placing Pura milk cartons into crates it makes it much easier to deliver Pura milk into milk bars, deli's and supermarkets.
Where are 2L Pura Bottles made?
Pura actually makes 2L bottles at the milk factory. The process involves heating plastic beads and blowing the hot plastic into a mould shaped like a 2L bottle. This process is called "Blow Moulding".
How does Pura confirm 2L of milk is in a 2L Pura milk bottle?
As part of Pura's quality procedures, milk bottles are checked by weighing a filled pack. This gives a good indication of the amount of milk in the bottle.

How old is the milk when it reaches the supermarket?
Pura aim to receive the raw milk off the farm and process it as quickly as possible to make sure that you have the freshest milk available at the supermarket. Typically the Pura milk you buy in the store is less than 3 days old.
What happens to the milk crates after they are emptied at the supermarket, milk bar or deli?
Pura recyle milk crates that are emptied at the supermarket. The crates are collected and returned to the factory for cleaning before they are filled with new Pura milk packs for delivery to supermarket, milk bar or deli.
