Glycaemic Index
Regular milk, reduced fat milk and skim milk all have a low glycaemic index (GI). GI is a way of ranking carbohydrate-containing foods based on their immediate effect on sugars in the blood.
Carbohydrate foods that break down quickly during digestion have a high GI (greater than or equal to 70). Those carbohydrates that are released slowly into the bloodstream have a low GI (less than or equal to 55).
The natural carbohydrates in milk are slowly released into the blood stream making them a low glycaemic index food.
Choosing low glycaemic index foods and drinks may help you feel fuller for longer, help control hunger, and provide sustained energy release. That is why they are often recommended for people watching their weight. Incorporating low GI foods in the diet can also help people manage sugar in their blood.
