What is omega-3?
Omega-3's are a type of polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3 PUFA).
There are long and short chain omega-3 PUFA. EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) are long chain omega-3, whereas ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) is a short chain omega-3.
Omega-3 fats play an important role in the body, as they are an important part of all our cells particularly in the brain, eyes and skin, and are also important for the production of certain hormones in the body.
Why omega-3 DHA?
Much of our brain is fat, of which a large part is omega-3 DHA - as is a significant part of our eyes. Young children's brains grow rapidly during the first year of life. For infants#, omega-3 DHA is usually supplied by breast milk or formula. However children's brains keep growing until they are at least two years old.
Therefore, growing children can benefit from omega-3. That's why we refer to omega-3 DHA as 'brain food' for growing children!
Where does the omega-3 come from?
The omega-3 DHA oil used in PURA Kids with omega-3 DHA is extracted from tuna oil. The tuna fish naturally produces the oil rich in omega-3.
How much omega-3 is in a serve?
In one 250mL serve of PURA Kids with omega-3 DHA there is 30mg of omega-3. This is largely DHA with some EPA. So, one 250mL serve of PURA Kids can provide a 1-3 year old child with 75% of their daily intake of omega-3*. Older children and adults will need more to meet their daily intakes.
A standard adult serve is a 250mL glass. This may be too much for some young children to drink in one sitting but others may drink this amount easily. Feel free to pour PURA Kids with omega-3 DHA on cereal, use it in cooking, or give young children small drinks throughout the day.
What other foods provide omega-3?
Long chain omega-3 PUFA are predominantly found in fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring and tuna, as well as marine algae. Some foods have been enriched with the goodness of omega-3, including certain breads, some eggs, as well as some milks, such as PURA Kids with omega-3 DHA.
Short chain omega-3 may be found in plant oils such as linseed, soy, flaxseed and canola oil.
Can omega-3 benefit adults as well as children?
Long-chain omega-3s are important for the brain and eyes, especially in the development of young children. They can also have benefits for your heart and joints - great news for adults. Omega-3s are essential nutrients, so it's important ti include them in our diet.
So enjoy PURA Kids with omega-3 DHA today and know you're doing something good for your children and may be for yourself too!
